Welcome to Grandma’s Crafts! I’m so happy you are here today. Today we are making a little garden on a hook: the Daisy Granny Square. It has a sunny yellow center, a ring of twelve white petals, and a green frame that turns the flower into a square you can join with others.
I think this is one of the sweetest squares there is. It only takes three rounds to make the flower and the square, so it works up fast, and the petals have that soft, rounded look that makes people stop and smile. Line a few of them up and it looks like a field of daisies in springtime.
The petals are made with a treble crochet cluster, which is just a few treble stitches that start separately and finish together. If you have never made one, don’t worry at all. I explain it step by step below, and after the first two or three petals you will have the hang of it.
You can stop after three rounds for a small square, or keep adding classic granny rounds to make it as big as you want. Let’s gather our three colors and get started!

Worsted weight (#4) yarn in 3 colors: yellow (Color A), white (Color B) and green (Color C)
4.5 mm (7) or 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook, or the size recommended on your yarn label

Special Stitches
Beginning petal: Ch 4 (counts as a treble). *Yo twice, insert your hook in the same stitch, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice*. Repeat from * once more (3 loops on the hook). Yo and pull through all 3 loops.
Petal (3 tr cluster): *Yo twice, insert your hook in the stitch, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice*. Repeat from * 2 more times, all in the same stitch (4 loops on the hook). Yo and pull through all 4 loops.
Pattern Notes
The square is worked in joined rounds with the right side facing you. Do not turn.
The beginning ch 3 counts as a double crochet, and the beginning ch 4 counts as a treble crochet.
Fasten off at the end of each color and join the next color where the pattern tells you.
Stitch counts are in parentheses at the end of each round.
Daisy Granny Square Pattern
Round 1 (Color A, yellow): Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc) and work 11 dc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. Fasten off. (12 dc)
Round 2 (Color B, white): Join Color B with a sl st in any dc. Make a beginning petal in the same stitch, then ch 3. *Petal in the next dc, ch 3*. Repeat from * 10 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning petal. Fasten off. (12 petals and 12 ch-3 spaces)
Round 3 (Color C, green): Join Color C with a sl st in any ch-3 space. Ch 4 (counts as the first tr), then work (2 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in the same space to make the first corner. 3 dc in each of the next 2 spaces. *(3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in the next space for a corner, 3 dc in each of the next 2 spaces*. Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 4. (48 sts and 4 ch-3 corner spaces)
Round 4 (optional, Color C or a new color): If you are staying with Color C, sl st in the next 2 tr and into the corner ch-3 space. If you are changing color, fasten off and join the new color with a sl st in any corner space. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same corner space. *Work 3 dc in the space between each pair of stitch groups along the side (3 times). (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner space*. Repeat from * 2 more times, then work 3 dc in each of the last 3 spaces between groups. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (60 dc and 4 corners)
Finishing: Fasten off and weave in all the ends. A light steam helps the petals relax and the corners lie nice and square.
Making the Square Bigger
Round 4 is simply a classic granny round, so you can repeat it as many times as you like. Each new round has one more group of 3 dc on every side. Put (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner space and 3 dc in every space between the groups along the sides. Changing colors every round or two gives a lovely framed look.
Tips From My Crochet Basket
Pull the loops of each petal up to the full treble height before you finish them. Short loops make skinny petals.
If your petals ruffle, your ch 3 between them may be too loose. If the circle cups, try loosening the chains a little.
Join each round in a different place so the joins don’t line up in one spot.
Choose a cream or off white for the petals if you want a softer, vintage look.
Color Ideas
The classic daisy is yellow, white and green, but this square is lovely in other colors too. Try a pink center with white petals and a sage green frame for a cottage look, or make every flower a different color on a cream background for a cheerful scrappy blanket. For something calm and modern, use two neutrals and one soft pastel.

Ways to Use Your Daisy Squares
Four squares make a pretty coaster set, nine make a pillow front, and a bigger group turns into a baby blanket or a spring throw. You can also sew a single square onto a tote bag, or make a row of them for a table runner.
