Hello, my dear friends, and welcome once again to our warm and cozy corner here at Grandma’s Crafts. Today, I am so happy to sit with you and share a pattern that feels like a gentle embrace for a newborn, a beautiful Baby Cocoon and Hat set, soft, comforting, and lovingly handmade.
There is something truly special about creating for a little one, don’t you think? This lovely design, inspired by the original pattern found in , is one of those projects that brings both simplicity and meaning together. Much like the warm and welcoming style we admire in other crochet guides, this pattern is built with basic stitches and a gentle rhythm, making it perfect for beginners who want to create something truly heartfelt.
At the heart of this pattern is the simplicity of working in the round. The cocoon begins with a small oval base and gradually grows, stitch by stitch, into a soft and cozy shape that wraps around the baby like a little nest. This technique, as seen in many beginner-friendly crochet projects, allows you to focus on repetition and consistency, helping your hands gain confidence while your piece slowly takes form.

One of the most comforting aspects of this cocoon is its structure. The fabric is made entirely with single crochet stitches, creating a dense, warm texture without gaps, perfect for keeping a newborn snug and secure. As the pattern continues, the increases gently shape the base, and once the desired width is reached, the body grows evenly into a smooth, elongated form. It’s a peaceful process, my dear, one that feels almost meditative as each round builds upon the last.
The matching hat follows a very similar approach, beginning at the top and growing outward before forming a soft, rounded shape. This thoughtful construction ensures a comfortable fit while maintaining that same cozy texture. And when you fold the edge to create a soft cuff, it adds such a lovely finishing touch, simple, yet so charming.
Materials
You will need:
- Bulky weight yarn (soft and baby-friendly)
- Crochet hook US K/10.5 (6.5 mm)
- 2 stitch markers
- Yarn needle
Sizes:
Newborn to 3 months (as noted on page 1)
Gauge
9 sc = 4″
8 rounds = 4″
Checking your gauge helps your cocoon fit just right.
Stitches (US Terms)
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- st = stitch
- PM = place marker
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (no joining).
BABY COCOON
We begin at the bottom edge and work upward.
Round 1 (Foundation Oval)
- Ch 9
- Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across
- Work 3 sc in last chain (this creates a curve)
- Continue working on the opposite side of the chain
- Place stitch markers at the ends
This creates a soft oval base, as shown on page 1.
Increasing Rounds
Now we gently grow the cocoon:
- Work sc around
- Increase near the marked stitches
As described in the pattern, you will:
- Work until just before the marker
- Add 2 sc in the next stitch
- Continue around
Repeat these increase rounds until you reach the full width (about 54 stitches).
Body
Once the base is wide enough:
- Continue working sc evenly (no more increases)
This builds the long, soft tube of the cocoon.
Continue until the cocoon measures about 21 inches long.
Finishing
- Fasten off
- Weave in ends
- Fold the top edge slightly outward
This creates a soft cuff, just like in the photo on page 1.
MATCHING HAT
Now we make a sweet little hat to match.
Round 1 (Top of Hat)
- Ch 5
- Sc into chains to form a small oval
- Place markers at each end
Just like the cocoon, we begin with a small base.
Increasing
- Work sc around
- Increase at the marked points
Continue until the hat reaches about 42 stitches around.
Hat Body
- Work evenly in sc (no increases)
Continue until the hat measures about 8 inches tall.
Finishing
Fasten off. Weave in ends and fold the edge upward for a soft brim.
What makes this set truly special is not just how it looks, but how it feels. The softness of the yarn, the warmth of the stitches, and the care placed into every round all come together to create something meaningful. It’s the kind of handmade piece that becomes part of a baby’s first memories, even if only in photographs and quiet moments.
As you work through this pattern, you may find yourself slowing down, enjoying each stitch a little more. Crochet has a way of doing that—bringing calm, comfort, and a sense of purpose. And when you finish, you’ll have more than just a cocoon and hat… you’ll have created a small piece of love.
